Zigzag Olives

Photo 1: Zigzag Olive shells found washed up on the beach.

Zigzag Olive: Olivella pedroana

This olive snail is much smaller than the Purple Olive that is commonly found on the exposed coast of Vancouver Island. The specimens above are only about 4mm in length. It is distinguished from other olive shells by the zigzag pattern visible on the side. It is also a fairly rare find on Vancouver Island, though there seems to be an established presence near Wickanish Beach in the Pacific Rim National Park.
